Aakash Will Be Free In The Hands Of Every Student In India: Sibal

Aakash Tablets will be free in the hands of every student in India, said the Hon'ble Minister for HRD, Communications & IT, Government of India, Shri Kapil Sibal, who was the Chief Guest of ISA Vision Summit 2012. Shri Sibal further added that based on the feedback from Aakash 1, they would be launching Aakash 2 which is a much better, faster and more efficient version of the Aakash that was launched. The current cost of Aakash is Rs. 2276 – that is for one lakh pieces. The cost will come down to Rs. 1500 once the numbers increase to one million. Shri Sibal said that half of cost would be subsidized by the Government of India (GOI) and the remaining Rs. 750 would be funded by educational institutions. He also added that they are now going to diversify the production base and indigenize Aakash.

In his speech Shri Sibal said “Today Electronics is the largest and fastest growing manufacturing industry in the world. Current global hardware production is around $ US 1.75 trillion and by 2020 it is going to grow upto $ US 2.4 trillion. On the domestic front, electronic driven industry has emerged as the contributor to national economy.”
“We can develop semiconductor manufacturing in India since we have the chip design services available here and enormous high quality human resource. We should be able to leverage that to ensure that we can develop the semiconductor manufacturing sector in India,” added Shri Sibal.
With Aadhar and the national e-governance plan applications, mobile will be used for re-authentication and availing large number of government services without having to visit government offices. This will not only improve the efficiency and effectiveness of public services but will also help reduce corruption in public life, he said.
Shri Sibal congratulated the leadership of ISA for making this body more inclusive through focused initiatives and alliances with other international associations. “ISA has made a mark for itself in terms of working on national concerns and creating awareness about the potential of Indian electronic and design market. ISA is today a very credible and respected voice in the industry,” he remarked.
ISA Vision Summit 2012, the seventh edition of the flagship annual conference of India Semiconductor Association (ISA), the apex trade body representing the Indian semiconductor and electronics industry, was inaugurated today. The theme of this year’s conference is “Growth drivers for emerging markets: Semiconductors and Electronic Systems.” This edition of the ISA Vision Summit was the largest Vision Summit, since its inception in 2006. ISA has added 41 new members since last year which includes greater presence of Indian companies. Out of the total of 175 members two-thirds are the semiconductor companies and remaining are the system companies.
