Monday, June 25, 2012:
NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) announced today that Mobile TeleSystems OJSC ("MTS" – NYSE: MBT), the leading telecommunications provider in Russia and the CIS, together with NEC Neva Communications Systems (NEC Neva), a subsidiary of NEC Europe, is providing a new femtocell service in Siberia (*1). The service, “Consistent Reception” (*2) establishes or improves – with the help of NEC Neva’s femtocells – the 3G coverage of corporate customers in facilities where thick walls and steel beams may otherwise obstruct the signals coming from base stations.

NEC Neva is providing MTS with a multi-function femto-solution and ensures the technical support of the femto-network. Femtocells – mini base stations for cellular telecommunication – allow users to simultaneously install up to 16 voice connections and reach an Internet access speed of up to 7.2 Mbit/sec using HSDPA technology.
“MTS customers in Siberia are receiving an exceptional new service that improves the quality of their connections. Support and technological development of femto-networks in Russia and CIS countries will stay one of the priority tasks of NEC Neva,” said Alexey Shashkov, key account manager, NEC Neva Communications Systems.
“The use of femtocells helps to solve issues with communication quality in any premises. We expect that the service will be of interest to organizations with offices, warehouses, buildings underground, remote locations outside of cities or other locations that have weak cellular signals,” said Aleksander Solovenchuk, director of MTS Siberia. “At the same time, MTS will promote the development of 3G networks in the region. It will also modernize the communication channels to considerably increase the throughput capacity of the network, resulting in better service quality and data transfer velocity.”
###
Note:
*1 In April 2011 CJSC “NEC Neva Communications Systems” won the tender of OJSC “MTS” for the construction of femto-networks in Siberia, having provided the most corresponding solution for meeting the area’s requirements.
*2 “Consistent Reception” is provided upon the request of MTS subscribers who wish to optimize their 3G signal quality. The price of the service is calculated individually taking into account the capacity of the necessary equipment, area of the premises where the client wants to ensure the 3G qualitative connection, quantity of users to be serviced by the femto-network, availability of the necessary capacity of internet-channel, etc.
