Microsoft may have been first to the tablet market with their failed attempt to launch a Windows XP tablet in 2012, but it was only when the Apple iPad hit stores that the tablet market really exploded. It will no doubt be frustrating to Redmond to have made the first move into larger, content creation themed tablets with the Surface with only moderate success to see the predictions that the Apple iPad Pro will be the device to really take that market into maturity.

Last night I made my way to the rooftop of a New York City hotel to pick up Samsung's new Galaxy Tab S2, the sequel to last year's reasonably well-regarded Galaxy Tab S. The new tablets, which come with 9.7-inch and 8.0-inch varieties that share most of the same specs, build upon their predecessors in most of the right ways—they're a little faster, they trade a movie-friendly 16:10 aspect ratio for a reading-and-productivity-friendly 4:3 aspect ratio, and the old swipe-based fingerprint reader has been tossed out in favor of one you can simply press.

Earlier today, Samsung announced that it would release the Galaxy Tab S2 8.0 and Galaxy Tab S2 9.7 on September 3 in the US, with all four major carriers getting ready to sell LTE variants of the slates (while Wi-Fi only models will be carrier independent). September is also when the new tablets are going to be launched in Canada, though this won't happen in the early days of the month.

When was the last time you were excited about a tablet or PC?
That's an enduring question the consumer electronics industry has to grapple with, and the news isn't getting any better: Research firm IDC on Wednesday forecast that sales of both products will fall faster than previously expected. PC shipments are expected to tumble 8.7 percent this year, and won't stabilize until 2017. Tablets, meanwhile, will see an 8 percent decline in shipments.

Research firm IDC as a part of its Q2 2015 report announced on Wednesday, that the tablet market in India had stabilised and was growing again. The tablet market grew by 23 per cent. Overall, there were 1.04 million unit shipments representing a growth of 22 per cent for the same period in 2014 and a year over year growth of 15 per cent.
