Monday, November 18, 2013 There are many applications that make day-to-day working on the Ubuntu desktop really useful. These applications vary from productivity tools to the Web-based tools.

As cited on datamation.com, here’s looking at 15 such applications -

1. Dropbox – This tool allows for an easier collaboration of work with others on the web. It allows for sharing of documents right to sending images for others to view. You can share files and directories without listing your own computer on the web for others to view. It is compatible with the Ubuntu desktop and Android phone.

2. Parcellite – This has support for custom hotkeys and can capture hotlinks only. You can install Parcellite for avoiding whitespace and trimming newlines. It’s a necessary application for those who want to do a lot of copy/paste work for coding, writing and so on.

3. Wunderlist – This is a cross-platform offering support for Ubuntu, Android and more. This can be used to instantly and easily manage tasks on any given day. The greatest feature about Wunderlist is its ability to make new tasks either using the application or by sending an email.

4. gscan2pdf – This is unique as it has the ability to combine multiple documents into a single PDF file in an easy manner. It allows you to save your scans into various image formats too. If you bundle the above features with a plenty of scanner control options using SANE and gscan2pdf is an essential app to have.

5. gMTP – While most software music managers provide good MTP support for music players including my iRiver device, gMTP offers a much more consistent experience. It allows you to remove, add or modify your device's contents without any issues.

6. FreetuxTV – This app is reliant on a range of webtv and Web radio content sources. You can record a segment from a program when you require moving away from your desk permitting you to catch up on the news at a more suitable time.

7. gPodder – This allows me to stay in sync with the latest happenings throughout my interest areas. It permits for an easy subscription to podcasts and even offers the ability to select the media player that you want to use it on.

8. Skype Call Recorder – This should be used only when you as well as the other party you are in conversation with agree to the Skype call being recorded. This allows you to refer back to the inquiry at a later point of time.

9. VLC – This is different from other software media players as you can play anything with it. It can do a great job playing most DVDs as well. VLC can be used for capturing video from your webcam and even stream it your LAN if you opt to do so.

10. LibreOffice – This offers many functions in the word processing and spreadsheet arenas. The Writer and Calc are great for handing your daily routines.

11. Pithos – After you have installed Pithos, it offers you most of the functionality you would expect from running Pandora in a browser. It has Like, dislike, skip and all of the basic Pandora functions.

12. Chromium – This is a bit snappier, and the add-ons don’t become useless with every browser update. You can bundle these with the speed of the browser.

13. Y PPA Manager – This assists in keeping the PPAs added to your system under control. By adding, removing or simply creating a PPA backup, this tool is a great time saver for anybody who consistently needs to add new software to their system.

14. OpenShot – The latest release of it provides a great and stable experience. It allows you to easily generate neat 3D titles through Blender and then use OpenShot for exporting them to the file format of your choice.

15. Kazam – This functions quite efficiently on Ubuntu 12.04. It simply permits you to show with great ease how to accomplish a range of tasks when using Ubuntu. It allows you to generate a great screencast presentation that can then be easily uploaded to the YouTube for the viewers.
