Tuesday, December 10, 2013 HTC closed its 2013 chapter by announcing three new devices in the HTC Desire range in India. Atithya Amaresh from EFYTimes spoke to Sirpa H. Ikola, Sr. Director, Marketing, South Asia at HTC, about the devices, how she sees India as a market and their future plans. Here are the excerpts:

HTC, HTC Desire, HTC One, HTC for sale, HTC plans with India, HTC Desire 601, HTC Desire 501, HTC Desire 700, Sirpa H. Ikola, HTC Marketing, interview

Q: How do you see India as a market?

India is a huge market in terms of penetration. Also, considering the fact that about 60 per cent of users today connect to the Internet using their smartphone, gives a lot of scope to bring in new and good devices.

Q: Your latest flagship device 'HTC One' was touted as one of the best Android devices across the globe. However, it failed to perform in the Indian market. At the same time, there were other phones in the same range that performed well. What do you think was the reason?

The major reason I think was the delay in bringing the device to the country. At the time of its introduction, there was a lot of excitement amongst the users, but by the time it arrived in the market, the excitement had died down.

Q: Something similar happened with HTC One Mini And Max. Is it a strategy to delay flagships in the country?

No, not really! Infact, seeing the potential of Indian market, we will be looking into this and will try and bring the device much faster in the country.

Q: Why Android 4.1 for the Desire series? Do you think it will be a set back for your newly launched range?

You have a point, but that was the best we could bring at this point of time considering the compatibilities.

Q: Does that mean that the devices were rushed for the launch, because we are already seeing the entry of 4.3 and 4.4 is right in the corner, ready to slip into the devices.

No, not at all. Looking at the features of the device, we don't think people will mind or even consider the Android version. And to those it matters, I can only say that we will soon be bringing in the updates.

Q: So by when can we expect the update?

I can't really quote a time range, as am not aware of the Indian timelines but that will be coming soon for sure.

Q: Now let's talk about your future plans. Are there any more devices coming from HTC in 2013?

We have a good line up for the year 2014 but we close this year with these three devices.

Q: What can we expect in 2014?

We have a lot of devices in our One and Desire range. We are looking forward to bring some devices with new and developed technologies. But nothing that I can quote right now.

Q: What about Windows devices? You have been sitting quiet, while there are brands doing well with their partnership with the brand.

HTC is still a key partner with Microsoft, although there is nothing ongoing at the moment.

Q: My last question comes out from a rumour, that was recently floating in the tech market which says that HTC is up for sale. How true is that?

(laughs) Rumours are meant to be rumours. HTC is strong and there are no plans for any acquisition or sale, neither now nor in the future. We are growing and we will continuously be bringing in newer devices for the users.
