Tuesday, February 18, 2014 In a bid to take the personal computer into the depths of rural Kenya and other developing nations once it gets started, the Keepod Unite project has come out with a mere $7 crowd funded, Linux-based simple USB PC. The team behind Keepod is aiming to reach out to the impoverished communities and help in the fields of education, HIV prevention, agriculture and human rights.

The Keepod is essentially based on various versions of Linux and can run from any USB storage device having 8GB of space or more. Since it doesn't need any hard drive to function, the team could simply make use of discarded computers to set up a ‘community hub’.

Users can then plug into them via their Keepods and get started straight away. The team aims to provide at least 1500 Keepod Devices and 50 recycled computers for the initial phase of the project. They have started a crowd funding campaign on Indiegogo to raise $38 000 for the same. The campaign is getting tremendous response as well.

It must be noted that the Keepod is a completely self-contained solution where all user files and data is kept on the Keepod itself. The OS comes pre-installed with Google Chrome, Thunderbird, Skype, LibreOffice, VLC, Facebook and Twitter!

Here's what the makers say about the features of the device:

Keepod is our full desktop for offline or online work.

Unlike LiveUSB systems (like LinuxLive or WinToGo) that are not reliable enough to replace the traditionally installed OS (they are essentially designed to provide a system “preview” so users can test the system and then install it or as backup solutions) we use Keepod as our primary system. This require an important development effort on many different levels – security, drivers & compatibility, performance, file system reliability, system foot-print, and so on…

Keepod is based on Linux and therefore benefit great out-of-the-box SW compatibility.
