Friday, April 11, 2014 Using a Windows PC doesn't mean that you have to be trapped within it. There are many open source applications that run on Microsoft's Windows. Here are 10 of the best of the lot!

Open Source Software , Blender, Dia, Pidgin, GNUnet, Inkscape, MinGW, Claws Mail, Scribus, Tribler, QupZilla

1.Blender

Blender is a free and open-source 3D computer graphics software product used for creating animated films, visual effects, art, 3D printed models, interactive 3D applications and video games. Blender's features include 3D modeling, UV unwrapping, texturing, rigging and skinning, fluid and smoke simulation, particle simulation, soft body simulation, sculpting, animating, match moving, camera tracking, rendering, video editing and compositing. Alongside the modelling features it also has an integrated game engine.

2.Dia

Dia is a GTK+ based diagram creation program for GNU/Linux, MacOS X, Unix, and Windows, and is released under the GPL license. Dia is roughly inspired by the commercial Windows program 'Visio,' though more geared towards informal diagrams for casual use. It can be used to draw many different kinds of diagrams. It currently has special objects to help draw entity relationship diagrams, UML diagrams, flowcharts, network diagrams, and many other diagrams. It is also possible to add support for new shapes by writing simple XML files, using a subset of SVG to draw the shape.

3.Pidgin

Pidgin (formerly named Gaim) is an open-source multi-platform instant messaging client, based on a library named libpurple. Libpurple has support for many commonly used instant messaging protocols, allowing the user to log into various services from one application.

4.GNUnet

GNUnet is a free software framework for decentralised, peer-to-peer networking and an official GNU package. The framework offers link encryption, peer discovery, resource allocation, communication over many transports (such as tcp, udp, http, https, wlan and bluetooth) and various basic peer-to-peer algorithms for routing, multicast and network size estimation.

5.Inkscape

Inkscape is a free and open source software vector graphics editor. Its goal is to implement full support for the Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) 1.1 standard. Inkscape is cross-platform and runs on OS X, Unix-like operating systems, and Microsoft Windows.

6.MinGW

MinGW provides a complete Open Source programming tool set which is suitable for the development of native MS-Windows applications, and which do not depend on any 3rd-party C-Runtime DLLs.

7.Claws Mail

Claws Mail is a free and open source, GTK+-based email and news client. It offers easy configuration and an abundance of features. It stores mail in the MH mailbox format and also the Mbox mailbox format via a plugin. Claws Mail runs on both Windows and Unix-like systems such as Linux, BSD, Solaris, and Mac OS X.

8.Scribus

Scribus is an Open Source program that brings professional page layout to Linux, BSD UNIX, Solaris, OpenIndiana, GNU/Hurd, Mac OS X, OS/2 Warp 4, eComStation, and Windows desktops with a combination of press-ready output and new approaches to page design. Underneath a modern and user-friendly interface, Scribus supports professional publishing features, such as color separations, CMYK and spot colors, ICC color management, and versatile PDF creation.

9.Tribler

Tribler is an open source peer-to-peer decentralised client with various features for watching videos online. The user interface of Tribler is very basic and focused on ease of use, instead of diversity of features. Tribler is based on the BitTorrent protocol and uses an overlay network for content searching, which makes the program operate independent of external websites and renders it immune to limiting external action, for example, government restraint.

10.QupZilla

QupZilla is a free and open-source web browser, intended for general users. It allows seamless integration with users' desktop environments and has several distinguishing features positively received by reviewers. QupZilla is licensed under GPLv3.
