Thursday, January 31, 2013 Reports have indicated that if you boot Linux using UEFI on several Samsung laptop models, even once, then it's good enough to kill your machine permanently. The issue was first reported at Ubuntu bug tracker but now its seems the issue is also common for other Linux distributions as well. A user has reported that he opted for UEFI boot from BIOS and then tried to boot his laptop with Ubuntu 12.04 or 12.04.1 on a Samsung 530U3C live from his USB flash drive. That was the last time he saw is laptop alive.

This news is based out of user feedbacks. We are looking forward to alert you and not create panic. As per the report, after selecting UEFI boot with Ubuntu 12.04 on Samsung 530U3C laptop, the system screen immediately turned blank. Now, after that the user tried to shut down the system forcibly by long pressing the power button. Later, the laptop did not start at all, not even BIOS. It just showed a black screen. Kernel developers are speculating of a kernel driver for Samsung laptop as the cause of the issue.

Several other users have reported of a similar problem while trying to boot Linux. The problem also affects Ubuntu 12.10 and other Samsung models like 300E5C, NP700Z5C, NP700Z7C and NP900X4C series laptops as well. The problem occurs only when Linux is booted using UEFI irrespective of whether Secure Boot is on or off. However, you can stay safe by booting Linux using the Compatibility Support Module (CSM).

The developers at Samsung are creating a firmware update to prevent the issue. Canonical's Steve Langasek has advised users to start Ubuntu installation on Samsung notebooks from an up-to-date daily image.
