Saturday, May 26, 2012: Cisco has decided to discontinue its Android-based Cius tablet. OJ Winge, senior vice president for the telepresence technology group, Cisco says that the company "will no longer invest in the Cisco Cius tablet form factor, and no further enhancements will be made to the current Cius endpoint beyond what's available today." First announced in June 2010, the 17.8-cm (7-inch) tablet runs Android 2.2.2 on an Intel Atom processor. It was billed as a "Mobile Collaboration Endpoint". Earlier in 2012, Cisco said it was working on larger and smaller versions of the $750 tablet. However, the company didn't come out with any modified devices.
"It's not hard to see what hastened the Cius to its early demise, as Winge pins it on companies and customers encouraging a BYOD (bring your own device) strategy that likely brought more than a few iPads and beefier Android tablets into the space Cisco wanted to occupy," said an Engadget report.

However, the company plans to offer the Cius tablet to customers with "specific needs". Cisco will now be focussing on software such as Jabber and WebEx. "Moving forward, we intend to double down on software offerings, like Jabber and WebEx, that provide the anytime, anywhere, and any device experiences. We will leverage key learnings and key collaboration experiences native to Cius in our other collaboration products," Winge added.
