BSNL Disinvestment Will Reduce Workforce

However, BSNL is understood to have informed the government that over a period of the next five years between 50,000 and 60,000 employees will retire on their own, reports Deccan Chronicle.

Broadband To Cover Rural India: Sachin Pilot

Telecommunications is one sector where India is improving with every passing day. As more than half of India lives in villages it becomes imperative to disseminate telecom and broadband services to this sector. To do so, Sachin Pilot, minister of state, Communications and IT, is planning to set up 11,000 communication towers in rural areas along a number of villages bordering Bangladesh and Pakistan. Many of the towers will be located in the tribal belts of Nagaland, Tripura, Mizoram and Assam, reports SiliconIndia.

Remote-Controlled Street Lights On Delhi Roads

To save energy, Delhi's main civic agency, the MCD, has launched the country's first remote-controlled street lights which can be switched on and off using an Internet-enabled main server located in the heart of the city, says a SiliconIndia report. The first phase of the project has become operational and covers a distance of 101 kilometres on 52 city roads. The second phase will cover an additional 157 kilometres and 107 roads, and is scheduled to be completed this May. The total cost of the project has been pegged at over Rs 30 lakh and is being implemented by such companies as Philips Electronics, BP Project Pvt Ltd and Sweka Power-Tech Engineers Pvt Ltd. The Delhi-based firm Sweka is responsible for developing the software and related technology for the project.

Wipro Bags 70 Crore Govt Project

IBM Lays Off 2,500 Employees

IBM cut over 2,500 jobs, according to IBM union. The union said, "Once again, the company they toiled for turned its back on them and showed them the door and the unemployment line". Last year, about 10,400 employees lost their jobs, many US-based workers were shifted offshore to India and other locations. While IBM maintains a studied silence, one of the IBM spokespersons said in an e-mail that they are re-mixing the business to remain competitive. IBM is still the largest tech employer in the world and the US, based on available data and we expect that will continue said the e-mail, mentions EETimes.
